Tips to Travel to Cusco

Useful Tips to Enjoy Your Trip in Cusco

  • Consider planning your trip in advance, due of the tourism high season from May to October and the long holidays, to avoid disappointment during your visit.
  • Take into account the climate. The most recommended season is from April to October because is the dry season. And the rainy season is from November to March.
  • Consider prevent Altitude Sickness or Soroche. Consult your doctor before starting your trip. Upon arrival at Cusco is recommendable to rest the first hours, avoiding a physical overexertion to acclimatize. One way to mitigate the effects of altitude is to drink plenty of fluids (water) or drink the Coca tea.

Bussines Hours

  • Banks: 09:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday and Saturday from 09: to 13:00 hours.
  • Restaurants: 09: 00 to 22:00.
  • Commercial Shops: 10:00 to 20:00.

Currency Exchange

In Cusco is very easy to find places to change money, the easiest currency to exchange are the U.S. Dollars and in some places can change other currencies like the Brazilian real, the Argentine peso etc. Many of the travel services offer their prices in dollars and soles. It is advisable to have money in soles and dollars. To change the currency, there are many places near the center of the city known as “Casa de Cambio” most of them are at Sol Avenue, or else you can do it on the banks keeping in mind the office hours.

Local currency

The official currency in Peru is the “Nuevo sol” and its symbol is S/.We currently have in circulation the following:
Bills of 10,20,50, 100 and 200 nuevos soles
Coins of 1,2 and 5 nuevos soles, and of 5,10,20 and 50 cents of nuevo sol.

Credit Cards

If you want to get money with your credit card in Cusco is easy to find ATMs and this support almost all the credit cards. The most widely accepted cards are Visa and Master Card, American Express and Diners cards are accepted on a smaller scale. If you going to make a tourist excursion outside of the Cusco city is preferable to carry in cash.

Internet Access

Internet access is available in the most hotels, and some restaurants offers free internet via Wi-fi. Also it can be found in some public internet booths , where the prices are very modest.


Peru has two major companies that are Movistar and Claro. calling services is normal and you can find cabins for local and international calls at an affordable price and there are booths on the streets where coins and cards used.


The electric voltage in Peru is 220 volts and 60 cycles. In most bathrooms of hotels there is a 110 volt plug for electric shavers.

Cusco city is safe, but we have to be careful and take some precautions as in any place.

It is preferable to not wear or carry items of value, it is best to leave them in the hotel.
Photocopy your passport and other documents of identity, and keep the originals in the hotel.
We recommend to take authorized taxi services by the Cusco municipality and arrange a price with the driver before accepting the ride.
Advisable change your money in exchange offices and banks.
