The Salkantay trekking route is an alternative to the classic Inca Trail and is certainly one of the best ways to get to Machu Picchu. It is an exciting five day journey where nature offers beautiful views of the snow-capped mountains such as Salkantay, and valleys that descend into the jungle with its dense forests and rivers full of life. In 2007 the National Geographic Adventure magazine named the Salkantay Trek among the 25 best treks in the world.

Day 01 Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa

  • Walk: 7-8 kms horas/16
  • Campsite: Soraypampa

Day 02 Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Chaullay – Collpapampa

  • Walk: 9-10 horas/18kms
  • Campsite: Collpapamapa

Day 03 Collpapampa – La Playa

  • Walk: 4-5 hrs / 15kms
  • Campsite: Playa

Day 04 La Playa – Llactapata – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes

  • Walk 8-9 hrs / 12kms
  • Overnight in hotel at Aguas Calientes.

Day 05: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu-Cusco

  • Guided tour in Machu Picchu
  • Return to Cusco.

Day 01 Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa  (L)(D)

We’ll start very early, and we will pick you up from your hotel (05:00)am, to go in our private transport to the village of Mollepata (2900m./9514 ft ). Once there we will have a short stop for breakfast (not included) , stock up on some supplies and then get ready to start the hike, along with our support team of chefs, muleteers and mules. The first sections will take us approximately 04 hours until the place of Sayllapata (3200m./10498 ft), where we will have lunch and a short break to restart our hike up to our first campsite in Soraypampa (3850m./12631 ft) arriving at 17:30 hours approximately. During our tour we will appreciate the beautiful views of the snow capped peaks of the Andes and the Apurimac river valley.

Day 02 Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Chaullay – Collpapampa  (B)(L)(D)

This is the most challenging day of the trek but also the most spectacular. We will ascend to Salkantay Pass (4600m./15091 ft) surrounded by typical environment of the highlands and breathtaking snow capped peaks like Salkantay (wild mountain) with its 6300 m./20547 feet high. Once you reach the Salkantay pass,we wil descend by 02 hours to the place of Wayraqmachay where we will enjoy a delicious lunch and a short break, and then keep descending and get deep into the cloud forest until to our campsite Collpapampa.

  • Distance: 18 km.

Day 03 Collpapampa – La Playa (B)(L)(D)

Very early we will start our journey along the valley of Collpapampa by plains and gentle trails through dense vegetation with plantations of fruit trees and coffee plantations, to arrive in the afternoon to our campsite La Playa (2400m./7864 ft) which is a small village with shops and basic services. If you are interested in visiting the Hot springs of Santa Teresa let it know to your guide in advance to organize it.

  • Distance: 15 km.

Day 04 La Playa – Llactapata – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes  (B)(L)(D)

This day, our walk will start ascending by an old Inca trail up to the archaeological site of Llactapata (2650 m./8694 ft) where we will appreciate from another angle the Citadel of Machu Picchu. And then we will descend to the place of hydroelectric. And finally we will take the train to Aguas Calientes.

Day 05: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu-Cusco (B)

Very early we will have a breakfast at the hotel and then we will board the tourist bus that will transfer us to the sacred city of Machu Picchu  (2400 m./7874 ft)and start the guided tour of about 2 hours to visit the temples, plazas, and religious sites of this enigmatic city, after the end of the tour, you will have a free time to explore the site by your own , then we will descend to Aguas Calientes at a scheduled time for lunch and then board our train back to Cusco and returning to our hotel .

  • Walking  poles (rubber covers required in order not to damage the Trail)
  • Insect repellent, sun block, sun hat and sunglases.
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • gloves, wool socks, wool hat for cold nights
  • Optionally: water- sterilizing tablets in case you pick up water from streams or rivers along the route
