The pre-inca Pikillacta Citadel belonged to the Wari Empire and had as its main centre the Department of Ayacucho including the Cusco area. The Pikillacta Citadel was built around the year 750 dc. And it stands out for the harmonic and symmetrical distribution of its buildings separated by streets perfectly aligned and distributed by sectors, such as the main square, its urban and religious area, besides having a well-organized system of roads. Its architecture is simple with rustic style walls, it was elaborate with stone settled on mud mortar and some of its most important buildings were plastered with gypsum and boast a considerable height. Pikillacta means the village of fleas in the quechua language and it was put in the colonial era due to the amount of existing buildings.

Temple of Andahuaylillas

Located at a distance of about 41 kilometers from Cusco’s city. The colonial church of Andahuaylillas boasts a wonderful interior decoration of mural paintings and art canvasses dedicated to St Peter and St Paul belonging to the Cuzco school of the eighteenth century. Also it has beautiful golden altars of baroque style dedicated to various saints and virgins.and is without any doubt one of the most beautiful chapels of the Peruvian colonial art, considered by many as the Sistine chapel of America.

Temple of Huaro

At 41 kilometers from the Cusco city is the church of San Juan Bautista Huaro , built in the second half of the sixteenth century. In its interior stands out its altar carved in wood and gilded with gold leaf of renaissance style, and its magnificent murals painted by the native artist Tadeo Escalante that show representations of hell, heaven, and the judgment where it shows an impeccable originality. Is there where the hell appear with depictions of evil beings who torment sinners that fall to the underworld on their way to death. And also the death is represented as a skeleton holding a scythe and at his feet the symbols of power such as the crown, the papal tiara which reminds us that everything in the life is vanity

These murals were instruments used to evangelize the indigenous and keep them faithful in the new Christian doctrine.

Chapel of Canincunca

It is a small chapel built at the beginning of the XVII century, in devotion to the virgin Mary known as Purificada very popular in the southern Peruvian Andean, it has mural paintings that decorate its interior walls and friezes with beautiful textiles patterns.
