Lima – History – Gastronomy


Lima the Capital of Peru, with near 8 million inhabitants is also known as the City of the kings. It was founded in 1535 by the Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro on the shores of the Pacific ocean. This modern metropolis has a great historical and cultural wealth as evidenced by its  pre-Hispanic, colonial and republican monuments. Its beautiful historic center was declared by UNESCO as cultural heritage of mankind and is composed of squares, churches, convents and colonial mansions. The Lima city now is  a modern and vibrant city where you will find excellent quality in tourist services such as hotels, shopping centers and restaurants of international fame.

  • Location: Lima is located in the central coast of Peru on the shores of the Pacific Ocean
  • Altitude: The Lima city is at 154 meters above sea level.
  • Climate: Summer (December – March) with an average temperature of 25 ºC and in winter from 12 to 15 ºC
  • Access: The main access by air is the Jorge Chavez international airport, located in the province of Callao at 40 minutes from the Lima downtown. By land is connected with many cities of the peruvian coast and countries such as Ecuador and Chile through the Panamericana highway, and to the east with some cities located in the peruvian highlands and jungle.

The Lima Plaza de Armas is also known as the Plaza Mayor and is located in the heart of the historic center of Lima. This is the place where Francisco Pizarro founded the Lima city in the year of 1535. The historical plaza has a colonial fountain as a central piece and around it. there are some of the most important buildings in Lima.

The cathedral occupies the site where the first major church in Lima once stood. It has with an austere interior decoration, and has genuine historical treasures such as the extraordinary choir stalls of Baltasar Noguera and various colonial altars. The Government Palace

The government palace was the residence of the conqueror Francisco Pizarro (1535), It was built on the ground before occupied by Taulichusco, former head of the valley of the Rimac River. Since then the site has been the center of political power in Peru. The building was rebuilt in the 1920s after a fire, and now the building is carefully decorated with outstanding works of art and halls dedicated to important figures in the peruvian history. Today is also the residence ofthe presidential family and every day at 11:45, the Courtyard of Honor is the scenario for the changing of the guard in charge of the glorious battalion of the hussars of Junín.

This religious complex was built during the second half of the XVI century by the Lusitano Constantino de Vasconcellos. In its interior stand out 14 side altars of different styles and the choir stalls, carved in cedar wood of Nicaragua. The convent presents extensive interior courtyards, surrounded by arches of stone, in whose passageways preserves part of the original coffered ceiling and  beautiful sockets decorated with tiles from Seville.

In the year of 1951 were discovered the impressive catacombs, where rest more than 70,000 people buried during the first decades of the colonial Lima, which are visited by tourists. It also draws attention  its beautiful library with more than 20,000 ancient texts.

Located in a beautiful colonial mansion dating from the eighteenth century and, it was built over a pre-Columbian pyramid of VII century. The museum features several permanent exhibitions like the great room of cultures where shows 5000 years of history, the textiles room  with the presentation of the first textiles remnants, the room of rituals, the golden and jewelry collection with over 1000 gold and silver pieces, the classified deposits  with 45,000 pieces for the public delight and finally its beautiful gardens with spacious terraces. All objects are carefully organized by epochs and regions. 

For specialists there is an area for ​​restoration with laboratories for textiles, ceramics and the metals objects. It also has a café with the best of Peruvian cuisine.

The National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History

The National Museum of Archaeology and History is the oldest one in Peru. It was founded in 1822. This museum is one of the largest in the country by the selection of valuable objects that show. Its rooms features beautiful artworks collections from the pre-Hispanic,colonial and republican era. Among the most valuable works are the Crossed HandsKotosh, the Estela Raimondi from Chavin culture, the Tello Obelisk (Chavin culture),the Paracas mantles and the colonial paintings of the Cuzquenian School.

Museo de Oro

Gold Museum boasts a collection of gold objects that belong to pre-hispanic times. In its rooms, are exhibited artworks  such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pectorals, nose rings, tumis, ceremonial knives, ceremonial vessels, between various objects. There are also textiles, huacos, ceramics and an interesting collection of weapons from the world of approximately 20,000 pieces in a good condition.

  • Location – This is located in Alonso de Molina 1100, MonterricoSurco.
  • Visiting Hours: Monday to Sunday from 10:30 am to 18:00 pm
  • Admission: Adults S/.33.00.

Museum of the Nation

The Museo de la Nación is one of the most important cultural centers in the country. It has a permanent exhibition called unity in diversity, where show part of all the pre-hispanic civilizations that have existed in Peru. This collection has around 12500 pre-hispanic  objects where stand out collections of ceramics, metals and textiles of the Paracas , Moche, Wari, Lima and other civilizations. Also boast 2500 pieces of colonial,republican,and popular art. In addition, there are temporary exhibitions, and cultural activities.

  • Visiting Hours: from Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00 pm
  • Admission: Free

Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI)

The Museum of Art is in one of the most beautiful buildings of Peru. It was built in 1870 and is considered a jewel of the national architecture. Mali has a collection of more than 12,000 objects, that can be appreciated in their exhibitions of pre-Columbian art, colonial art, photography, textiles, contemporary art, colonial and republican silverware and so much more.

  • Visiting Hours: From Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 20:00 pm. Saturday until 17:00 pm. Closed on Monday, Labor Day (May 1), Holy Thursday and Good Friday, Christmas (24 and 25 December) and New Year (December 31 and January 1).

The Sacred City of Caral was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The site is considered the oldest civilization of Peru and the Americas (5000 years old),compared with Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China civilizations. The Caral civilization is one of the cultures that allowed flourish states and cities along the coast and the andes. At the foot of its pyramidal buildings, the ancient people used to gather to worship their gods under the gaze of the political and religious authorities.

  • Location: Caral is located in the Supe Valley, in the province of Barranca, north of Lima, at km. 184 of the Panamericana Norte highway in the North Central area of ​​Peru.

It was the most important religious center of the Peruvian coast from pre-Inca times. The site houses palaces, squares and temples built with mud (some of which have been restored), among which are the Temple of the Sun and the Acllahuasi (house of the chosen women). Both were built during the Inca period (1440-1533).

This Huaca Pucllana archaeological site belongs to the Lima culture (200 to 700 DC) and is built almost entirely withadobes, filled with pebbles and sand, the Huaca Pucllana is composed of a pyramid of 25 meters in height, and set of squares, and courtyards. The site has an exhibition room, a tour circuit for visitors and other attractions.

  • Location: Located in the Miraflores district
  • Visiting Hours: Wednesday through Monday from 9;00 to 17:00 pm hours. On Tuesdays the Museum is closed for maintenance. There is no attention on January 1, Holy Friday, May 1, July 28 and December 25.
  • Admission: Adults  S/.  1200 Students and teachers S/.  5.00 (With identification) school, children and retirees S/.  1.00

formerly called Sugar Loaf, is a construction in the shape of truncated pyramid of the pre-hispanic period. The investigations carried out in the field have allowed us to recognize up to three times of occupation, each one is differentiated by the particular role that gave him being temple, cemetery and village later. Its construction datesapproximately to the first century before our era and then was abandoned in the III century and converted into cemetery. On this site have been found burials corresponding to Lima, HuauraSicanChincha and Yshsma cultures
