The Lares Trek to Machu Picchu is an unforgettable route for adventurers who want more direct contact with the local people and their traditions. The route crosses the Peruvian Andes, offering spectacular views of mountains, lakes, valleys and villages inhabited by indigenous people who have lived there for hundreds of years and continue to share the cultural wealth inherited from their ancestors. Travelers will then continue by train along the Urubamba Valley to Machu Picchu.

Day 01 Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha

  • Walk: 5 horas/10km
  • Campsite : Cancha Cancha

Day 02 Cancha Cancha – Laguna Queuñaqocha

  • Walk 8 horas/13km
  • Campsite : Queuñacocha lake

Day 03 Laguna Queuñacocha – Lares – Aguas Calientes Town

  • Walk: 5 horas/12km
  • Overnight in hotel at Aguas Calientes.

Day 04: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

  • Guided tour in Machu Picchu
  • Return to Cusco

Day 01 Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha (L)(D)

We will leave early from Cusco in a private transportation by 2 hours driving toward the small town of Huaran (3000m./9842 ft), starting point of the trek, and meeting with our support team (muleteers and mules) that will carry our camping equipment. The trek is an ascent of 5 hours which is going through a forest of queuñas a native tree. As we move the landscape change gradually to give place to the mountains and the beautiful highlands inhabited by communities of herders and farmers. During the trek, we will have our lunch and then we will continue until our first campsite,Cancha Cancha (3800m./12467 ft) .

Day 02 Cancha Cancha – Laguna Queuñaqocha (B)(L)(D)

After a fortifying breakfast we will begin our ascent toward the Pachacutec Pass (4400 m./14435 ft) from where it is possible to appreciate the stunning view of the snowcapped peaks of the Andes as the Colque Cruz and Sirijuani, also beautiful Andean lagoons. After a brief rest enjoying the landscape, we will descend to have our lunch next to a beautiful lagoon and then continue our walk through the community of Kiswarani to see its beautiful textile art and customs. Finally we will ascend to our camp next to Queuñaqocha Lake (3900 m./12795 ft).

Day 03 : Laguna Queuñaqocha  – Lares – Aguas Calientes town (B)(L)

After a good rest we will continue our hike toward the second Pass of Willkiccasa (4100 m./13451 ft) and enjoy the panoramic view of the snowcapped peaks of the Andes. After a brief rest and recover our breath, we descend toward the Cuncani village to walk by its fertile lands until the Hot Springs of Lares (3200 m./10498 ft). Once there we will have a delicious lunch and a time to give ourselves a dip in its relaxing waters. Finally in the afternoon we will take our tourist transport to go to Ollantaytambo station and board our train to Aguas Calientes (2040 m./6692 ft)

Day 04: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco (B)

After an early breakfast in the hotel, we will take the bus to ascent (30 min) to the Inca Citadel, and then start the guided tour exploring the main temples, squares and religious sites in the sacred city of Machu Picchu. After the tour you will have some free time for about 1 hour in Machupicchu. Then you will need to take the bus down to Aguas Calientes where you will have enough time for lunch (lunch not included). In the afternoon we will take the train back to Cusco, arriving at the train station, and returning to our hotel.

  • Walking  poles (rubber covers required in order not to damage the Trail)
  • Insect repellent, sun block, sun hat and sunglases.
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • gloves, wool socks, wool hat for cold nights
  • Optionally: water- sterilizing tablets in case you pick up water from streams or rivers along the route
