Overview

The Lares Trek to Machu Picchu is an unforgettable route for adventurers who want more direct contact with the local people and their traditions. The route crosses the Peruvian Andes, offering spectacular views of mountains, lakes, valleys and villages  inhabited by indigenous people who have lived there for hundreds of years and continue to share the cultural wealth inherited from their ancestors. Travelers will then continue by train along the Urubamba Valley to Machu Picchu.

Day 01 Cusco – Calca – Lares – Wacawasi – Sondor

Day 02 Sondor – Wacawasi Pass – Wayruro Pass  – Pallata

  • Campsite : Pallata

Day 03 Pallata – Pumamarca Ruins – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes town

  • Walk : 4 horas/10km
  • Train to Aguas Calientes
  • Overnight in hotel at Aguas Calientes.

Day 04 Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

  • Visit to Machu Picchu
  • Return to Cusco

Day 01 Cusco – Calca – Lares – Wacawasi – Sondor  (L)(D)

Early pick you up from your hotel in our private bus to head to the town of Lares. During the trip we will visit the town of Calca and its typical market where we can have a local breakfast and stock up on some supplies. Then we will ascend by a winding road to the archaeological site of Ancasmarka (4000 m./13123 ft) to give a visit to these ancient Inca warehouses on top of a mountain. Then continue our journey to the starting point of our trek where we will meet with our support team of wranglers and mules to carry all the camping gear, and start to walk up until Wacawasi village (3800 m./12467 ft) and from there continue to our camp Sondor (4200 m./13779 ft) in a place surrounded by mountains, fields, and llama farms.

Day 02 Sondor – Wacawasi Pass – Wayruro Pass  – Pallata (B)(L)(D)

After our breakfast we will begin the ascent to our first challenge the Wacawasi Pass to 4560 m of height on the side of the mountain of the Pumahuanca (5300 m./17388) and then a short break continue to our second challenge, the Wayruro Pass(4540 m./14895 ft) and appreciate from there the impressive snow capped peaks and the beautiful Azulcocha Lagoon. Then we will descend through beautiful Andean landscapes, knowing very closely to the local people with their ancestral customs and traditions. During the hike, we will have a well-deserved lunch for finally descend to our Camp of Pallata (3000 m./9842 ft) in the warm valley of Patacancha.

Day 03 Pallata – Pumamarca Ruins – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes town  (B)(L)

The third day is the easiest and softest. During the walk we will visit the archaeological remains of Pumamarka (3200 m./10498 ft) and then descend following an ancient Inca trail through farming terraces and beautiful streams to get to Ollantaytambo where we will have lunch (not included) and then board our train to Aguas Calientes Town (2040 m./6692 ft), located at the foot of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, where we will spend the night in a hotel.

Day 04 Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco (B)

Very early, we will have a breakfast at the hotel and then we will board the tourist bus that will transfer us to the sacred city of Machu Picchu and start the guided tour of about 2 hours to visit the temples, plazas, and religious sites of this enigmatic city, after the end of the tour, you will have a free time to explore the site by your own , then we will descend to Aguas Calientes at a scheduled time for lunch and then board our train back to Cusco and returning to our hotel.

  • Original passport and ISIC card (if you are student)
  • Camera and extra batteries, – Binoculars
  • Backpack to bring your personal belongings
  • trekking boots, preferably waterproof
  • Warm clothes, including jacket, fleece. Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping
  • Rain gear (jacket and pants if available) or rain poncho (plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco)
  • Walking  poles (rubber covers required in order not to damage the Trail)
  • Insect repellent, sun block, sun hat and sunglases.
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • gloves, wool socks, wool hat for cold nights
  • Optionally: water- sterilizing tablets in case you pick up water from streams or rivers along the route
  • Toilet paper, towel, and your personal medications
