Arequipa and Colca Canyon


Arequipa, “The White City”, was founded by the Spaniards in the year 1540 at the foot of the Misti volcano. This beautiful city located at 2300 meters of elevation, has a pleasant climate and invites you to discover its more relevant attractions. Its historic center is composed of a splendid main square surrounded by colonial buildings, churches and convents, the highlight being the beautiful Santa Catalina monastery. Surrounding of the city treasures such as beautiful viewpoints and colourful countrysides are abudant. Besides this , it also boasts having one of the most most prominent attractions of the country, the Great Colca Canyon. It is one of the deepest in the world and is located in the district of Chivay, where you can appreciate the majestic flight of the Andean condor.

  • Location: Peruvian highlands, 1009 km South of Lima
  • Elevation: 2300 m.s.n.m.
  • Climate: Dry and sunny, with an average maximum temperature of 25 ° C and minimum of 10 ° C .  Arequipa has first class tourist  services including hotels, restaurants, and many recreational centers.
  • Access Routes: Arequipa has perfect transportation to and from other regions of Peru, both by air and by land. There are daily flights from Lima (Jorge Chavez) to Arequipa (Alfredo Chavez Ballon), and the flight takes about 1hour. There are also daily flights to and from Arequipa via the cities of Cusco, Puno (Juliaca), and Tacna with durations of approximately 30 minutes. Some airlines companies providing this service are: LAN, Taca and Avianca, Star Peru, and Peruvian Airlane. There are many transport companies. Scheduling daily departures by bus from Lima to Arequipa, with an approximate journey time of 15 hour, as well as direct daily transportation to and from Arequipa to the cities of, Ica, Nazca, Puno, Cusco, and Tacna. Some transport companies are : Southern Cross, Oltursa, Tepsa many others.

The Santa Catalina Monastery is the most important in Peru. It was founded in 1579 and occupies an approximate area of 20.000 m2 (215.285 square feet). It is a small enclosed citadel with cloisters, squares, streets, tile roofs and stony soils; it was built to shelter the daughters of the wealthiest families of the city. The Monastery hosts galleries that display canvasses from the famous 17th century Cusco and many religious relics, and it also exhibits rooms of different architectural styles with well-preserved physical settings typical of daily life more than 400 years ago.

This is a complex of buildings erected by the Jesuits for religious and residential purposes; its construction began in 1590 and ended in 1698. The buildings form a monument of the baroque mestizo that, according to many, shows the most beautiful 17th century religious architecture. The temple dominates the centre of the complex. The interior of the temple houses more than sixty paintings of the Cuzco school by artists such as Bernardo Bitti and Diego de la Puente

This is ne of the first 17th century monuments in the city. It was built of “sillar” (a volcanic stone) in the neoclassical style.and houses invaluable objects like a church pulpit brought from Lille, France, and a 15-metre high monumental Belgian organ.

The Sabandía Mill is located at 8 km south of the city of Arequipa. The building dates from 1785, and represents the typical architecture of the region, using as a material the ashlar stone . The construction is characterized by the use of solid supports and rustic balconies. Also, here is possible to see the techniques used to process wheat using stone mills.

Located in the historic center just 5 blocks from the Plaza de Armas of Arequipa. This traditional neighborhood of narrow passages, small squares and large houses, is the most representative area of ​​the old Arequipa. In this place the Dominican priests were established in 1538, constructing a chapel for the natives evangelization of the area and prepare the ground for founding a new Spanish city. Highlights a small bridge that connects the Church San Lazaro and the square with the rest of the neighborhood.

The Juanita Mummy was found in the year 1995 at the nevado Ampato belonging to the area of snow-capped volcanoes of the south of Peru, in the cordillera of the Andes. The Inca mummy belongs to a girl of 12 to 14 years of ageapproximately, that was sacrificed as part of a religious ritual known as the Capac Cocha. The discovery of the mummy Juanita caused a sensation in the scientific world by the well preserved state that was found. Between May and June of 1996, was exhibited in the head office of the National Geographic Society in Washington. 

At present, the Juanita Mummy is exhibited in the Museo Santuarios Andinos of the Catholic University of Santa Maria

Along the valley there are several colonial towns where it is possible to highlight the culture and extraordinary examples of civil and religious architecture, stone houses roofed with thatch or bunch grass, and temples such as Lari, YanqueCabanoconde and Sibayo, constituting masterpieces of baroque art. From the famous Cruz del Condor lookout is possible to observe the landscape and the majestic flight of the Andean condor.

With an impressive landscape of volcanoes, rivers, salt flats, and fanciful rock formations, the national reserve protects the threatened ecosystem of the dry highlands that has been key to the conservation of both the Chili River Basin and the vicuña, in addition to other species of flora and fauna indigenous to that habitat. Among them are three species of flamingo, 358 plant varieties and 141 types of birds. It covers an area of 340,000 hectares and is home to three volcanoes: the Misti (5,840 masl), Chachani (6,075 masl), and Ubinas (5,676 masl), the most active in Peru.
