Puno is located on the shores of the highest navigable lake in the world, “The Titicaca”, in the Andean highlands. This land hosted the Tiahuanaco culture (800-1200 AD) and was the highest expression of the Aymara culture. Later, it was conquered by the Incas in the XV century and finally by the Spaniards  in colonial times. It´s history, magic, tradition, and spectacular scenery make Lake Titicaca and its islands a must-see for all visitors.

Lake Titicaca is considered the highest navigable lake in the world (3810 m) and is located between Peru and Bolivia. According to an ancient legend, from its waters emerged the founders of the Inca empire: Manco Capac and Mama Occlo. The lake has an area of ​​8559 km2 and a maximum depth of 283 meters.
On the Peruvian side, the Lake Titicaca has some islands with lots of history and custom, such as Taquile, Amantani, Anapia, Sopio and the floating island of Uros.

Located 5 km from the port of Puno (20 minutes by boat) at 3810 masl, this incredible sight is composed of more than 30 artificial islands, each of them are inhabited by three to five Uro – Aymara families who use water reeds as the primary material to build the islands and their homes. Among the main islands are Tupire, Santa Maria, Toranipata, Tribune, Capi, Titino Paraiso, Chumi, Negrone and Tinajero. The origin of the Uros dates from the pre-Inca times, and they still maintain the tradition of artisanal fishing and hunting wild birds.

Located 35 km from the port of Puno (3 hours by boat), the size of the island is 6 km2. The people of Taquile are very friendly and have kept their customs, traditions and traditional dress. The island is notable for the production of fine and beautiful Andean textiles recognized by UNESCO as a living heritage.

Located at 36 km northeast of the port of Puno (3 ½ hours by boat). The Amantani island has an area of 9 km2, the island is inhabited by eight communities dedicated to growing corn, potatoes, quinoa, oca etc. In addition to developing beautiful handicrafts such as textiles and stone carvings. the island has a lookout called Pachata from where you can watch the sunset over Lake Titicaca.

Located 34 Km north of Puno (35 minutes by car), this archaeological site is located on the shores of lake Umayo at 4000 meters. The Chulllpas of Sillustani are funerary towers built in stone in circular and square shapes, reaching up to 12 meters high. In the past, it housed the remains of important inhabitants of the Collao . 

Cathedral of Puno 

Located in the main square of the city. This beautiful piece of architecture was built in the seventeenth century, its façade is carved in stone by the Peruvian artist Simon Asto. The church is an example of the Spanish Baroque style, but also features Andean elements, giving the monument its mestizo character.

Conde de Lemos Balcony

It was built around 1668 and history tells us that in this house stayed the viceroy Conde de Lemos when he visited the area to supress a rebellion. Currently in this house is based the Puno Regional Cultural Department office and it also holds the “Francisco Montoya Riquelme” art gallery.

Huajsapata Hill

Is a natural lookout point, from where you can see the city of Puno and the backgrouns the Lake Titicaca. On the summit there is a monument dedicated to the founder and first ruler Inca Manco Capac.

Chief Magistrates House

This colonial house dated from the XVII century. Currently the house is used for art exhibitions. It also has a coffee bar, library, Internet and video club.

Carlos Dreyer Museum

This museum account with 5 rooms where are exhibited objects of pottery, lithic pieces, textiles, gold and silver pieces of the pre-hispanic time. and the bishop jewels of Puno cathedral. It also has a numismatic collection, art gallery and a room exclusively dedicated to display golden object from the burial tombs of Sillustani

Yavari Museum Boat

It is an Iron hulled Ship, made in Great Britain in the 1860s and was transported from the Pacific Ocean coast to the Andean highlands by pieces. It display inside the different compartments as well as documents such as files, models and historical maps.
