Overview

The route Huchuy Qosqo to Machupicchu is a thrilling 3-day adventure that includes a hike through the mountains near Cusco to arrive at the Incan site of Huchuy Qosqo on the heights point of the Sacred Valley, and then a train ride to Machu Picchu.

The route goes through beautiful Andean landscapes, with spectacular views of the Andes mountain range and the snowcapped mountains such as Pitusiray and Sawasiray framing the beauty of this place.

Day 01 Cusco – Tambomachay – Pucamarca

  • Walk: 6-7 hours / 15Km.
  • Campsite at Pucamarca.

Day 02 Pucamarca – Huchuy Qosqo – Lamay – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes.

  • Walk: 3 hours / 4km
  • Visit to Huchuy Qosqo’s archaeological site
  • Overnight in hotel at Aguas Calientes

Day 03: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

  • Guided tour in Machu Picchu
  • Return to Cusco.

Day 01 Cusco – Tambomachay – Pucamarca (L)(D)

Very early we will head to 10 km outside the city of Cusco toward the site of Tambomachay (3765m./12352 ft), from where we will begin our hike ascending the mountains covered by the Andean grass and surrounded by a beautiful landscape with lakes as the Qoricocha, and small Andean villages dedicated to the agriculture and the farming of llamas and alpacas, during this tour we will reach the maximum height in the pass of Rumicruz (4230 m./13877 ft) then descend to our campsite in the indigenous community of Pucamarca (3980 m./13057 ft).

Day 02 Pucamarca – Huchuy Qosqo – Lamay – Ollantaytambo–Aguas Calientes. (B)(L)

After our delicious breakfast, we will start our trek to the small canyon of Leon Punku, with remains of an ancient paved Inca road that descends to the archaeological site of Huchuy qosqo (3600m./11811 ft), which was ancient royal house belonging to the Inca sovereign Wiracoqocha composed of beautiful agricultural terraces and palaces with an exceptional panoramic view of the mountains covered with perpetual snow and the fertile sacred Valley of the Incas. Our visit to the Inca site will last for about 01 hours and then we will continue descending to the village of Lamay (2800m./9186 ft) to take our private van to Ollantaytambo and then board our train to Aguas Calientes (2040 m./6692 ft).

Day 03: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco  (B)

Very early, we will have a breakfast at the hotel and then we will board the tourist bus that will transfer us to the sacred city of Machu Picchu and start the guided tour for about 2 hours to visit the temples, plazas, and religious sites of this enigmatic city, after the end of the tour, you will have a free time to explore the site by your own , then we will descend to Aguas Calientes at a scheduled time for lunch and then board our train back to Cusco and returning to our hotel .

  • trekking boots, preferably waterproof
  • Warm clothes, including jacket, fleece. Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping
  • Rain gear (jacket and pants if available) or rain poncho (plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco)
  • Walking  poles (rubber covers required in order not to damage the Trail)
  • Insect repellent, sun block, sun hat and sunglases.
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • gloves, wool socks, wool hat for cold nights
  • Optionally: water- sterilizing tablets in case you pick up water from streams or rivers along the route
  • Toilet paper, towel, and your personal medications
