Climate & Geography

Peru’s geography is varied and has 11 ecoregions and 84 life zones that exist in the world. That makes it a country of diverse landscapes and natural resources. The easiest way to identify the Peruvian territory is through its three regions: Coast, Highlands, and Jungle.

The Peruvian Coast

Geography: It is a narrow strip next to the Pacific Ocean comprised by deserts and fertile valleys formed by rivers that descend from the Andes mountain range.

Climate: The coast has a temperate to warm climate , with enough moisture to produce cold in winter, and during the summer the humidity decreases and the temperature increases to 30 ° C. The north coast has warm temperatures almost all year. The Central and South Coast have two defined seasons : Winter from April to October and  Summer from November to March.

The Peruvian Highlands

Geography: The mountain region of Peru, the Andes mountain range dominates the landscape and has at the same time several ecoregions in its different elevation levels. The northern Andes are lower and wetter than the rest, The central Andes are the highest and steep, and here is where you can find  the highest peak of the country  the Mount Huascaran, with 6,768 meters. The southern Andes are wider, and it is  known as the Altiplano or the high plateau.

Climate: The highlands has two seasons: summer (April to October) with sunny days, cold nights and little rain and is the ideal time to visit. Winter (November to March) with abundant rainfall. During the day the temperature can reach  24 °C, and at night the temperature can drop to -3 ° C.

The Peruvian Jungle Amazon

Geography: Located at the eastern side of the country, is a vast flat area covered by vegetation in the Amazon River basin, which is born of the union of the Maranon and Ucayali rivers. It is the largest region in the territory of Peru andis formed by the high jungle or mountainous (above 700 m) which is characterized by its cloud forests and lowland rainforest (below 700 m).

Climate: It has two distinct seasons. The months from November to March, with abundant rains, and from April to October with little rain, ideal time for travel  as the river levels decreases. Humidity is high all the year. Eventually, between the months of May and August there are occasional cold snaps called“friajes” or “surazos”  caused by winds from the extreme south of the continent where temperatures can drop up to 8 °C to 12°C
